the lighter side

Tragedy in Finland

Posted by mom811 on Friday, September 26th, 2008

It’s so sad to hear about the Finland shooting. This has caught my attention as we had been there just two months ago, and we could only praise the country in superlatives! The beauty, the peace, its being one of the richest countries in the whole world, the leisurely life of the Finnish people, their education system, their medical and social welfare…. ahhh positively superlatives in almost all aspects of life it seems.

But now, my heart goes to the families of the victims – eight female students, a male student and a male teacher – and to the country as a whole for having such a citizen as the gunman, which for me, could be very remote to happen. But wait, there was also a similar school shooting in the country in less than a year. It’s disturbing to parents and families of youngsters, and this includes our family here in the Philippines, as we have there three grandchildren of school age, though the youngest is still a starter. (On the other hand of course, though disturbing, we should not worry as these are isolated cases.)

What part has YouTube played in the life of the gunman? He had posted here four videos, with him firing a pistol; one has even the gun pointing to the person viewing the video. Last Monday, the day before the massacre (The victims were also burned; and the gunman shot himself), Finnish police traced the owner of the videos, but after the interview, they released him as there was no grounds for further action. Later, they found a note saying he planned his violent act since 2002 yet, as “he hated ‘people and the human race’”.  :(  Very, very sad indeed!
